I've been thinking about the magic of being a school librarian, and what has made it so magical for me. My favorite moments are when students are choosing their books in the library. I love watching them, talking about what they like to read, and helping them find the books they want to check out. I listen and write down titles if it's something we don't have yet. I love recommending books I have enjoyed or have seen students fall in love with. There's fun, excitement, and freedom to choose in the library. There's diversity on the book covers I have displayed. There's organization, and peace, and understanding. I am there to help, and it makes me happy.
I love teaching and learning, and I love the library the most of all.
Before and after school, and during prep periods, I enjoy doing book repair, processing new books to get them ready for the shelf, and finding great books to tell students about or use for read-alouds. It's the right balance of social time and quiet time for my personality. People I work with, in all the schools I have worked have known that I always prioritize people over anything else, and will drop what I am doing right away to meet their needs first.
As a child I loved going to the library. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had as a teacher and librarian.
It's magical indeed.
